Sexual diversity in the erotic market:gender, interaction and subjetivities in a suburban nightclub in Rio de JaneiroIn this article, based on fieldwork conducted between 2004 and 2005 (Oliveira, 2006), I study the dynamics of erotic interaction at a nightclub located in the suburbs of the city of Rio de Janeiro, frequented by a predominantly lower class public, patronized by travestis, cross-dressing gays and their sexual partners.2 This nightclub is unique in the carioca GLS circuit, recognized by its patrons as the only club where “men don’t pay a cover”. Door fees are only charged for patrons whose gender performances are classified as “feminine”. Within the club, there are relatively well-lit public areas, labeled “back alleys”, used by clients to engage in sexual practices with one or more partners.
